Sharq Sunset

Sharq actually means East - so this is a bit of a silly title.  It was taken yesterday from the parking of Souq Sharq.  I have wanted to take this particular photograph for years!  Bad luck with weather coupled with unbelieveable laziness meant I never got round to it.

Intlxpatr's sunrise posts are inspiring, and last week she posted about a Sunset Challenge.  This gave me the kick I needed and yesterday was the perfect opportunity.  The weather was a little dusty, but the result was as good as I could get it to be.  Yesterday, this was probably one of the most relaxing places to be in Kuwait.

*applaud* beautiful shot!

Oh, WOW. WOW. WOW.

I love the way the pier bisects the photo, and the subtle shimmering light flowing from beneath, and the poisonous looking haze into which the sun is setting. It is GORGEOUS!

I also think your sunrise over Kuwait the day you didn't get anything to drink during Ramadan shoots anything I have shot out of the water, proverbially speaking. :-) Mabruk! Well done!

I have a separate challenge for you, Bu Yousef - as I was looking at your cloud (word cloud) I spotted both mosque and Paris. Next time in Paris (or London) I want you to spot a mosque and shoot it for us. :-)

I saw in Al Qabas daily (yesterday) a group of gitls taking photos with a poster announcing the design/build of a new mosque in Germany. I love the idea and will post some of the main London mosque if I can find one in my files. Otherwise, as you said - next time.

In the meantime, have a look at this old post of mine... it's about the first (oldest) mosque in Europe outside Spain:

The first mosque I ever saw, anywhere, was in Schwetzingen, Germany, on the castle grounds. I don't know if it was ever a real, functioning mosque or whether it was built as a European fantasy/folly piece, not the real thing. If you go, go during spargel season (late April - very early June) for their famous white asparagus.

[...] I am going to give you this one last weekend and one last week to come up with your sunset photo. Bu Yousef, AbdulAziz and Someday have shown us that yes, it is possible to find a sunset in Kuwait without [...]

Amazing shot, love the soft light of the sun reflecting all over the water.

What is your preferred lens kit?

Thank you :)

I travel often so my favorite is 18-200 lens with my Nikon DSLR. It means I don't have to carry any other equipment.

Thank you :)

The sunset is a relatively short window but I must admit I took almost 50 shots at different settings to choose my favorite later. Traditional photographers hate people like me - but whilst I agree that my approach lacks the attention to detail and knowledge - this is the joy of the digital age. We are all, to a certain degree, experts!

Though i don't know much about HDR pics but do you think you could try mixing some of the pics you took with different exposures to see what the HDR would look like? Again, i'm not sure how an HDR pic is taken but do you thnk it wud work?

October 26, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDarya

Kuwait is too small :)

I'm afraid I don't know anything about HDR. It's on the list of things I want to learn. If in fact one can do the effect on a picture taken already, I will make this one my first.

Thanks for the visit.
