Northern Sights

We often overlook the things nearest to us.  I've seen quite a bit of the world, but this was my first trip to the North of Kuwait!  It's embarrassing how little we explore our tiny country.  On the journey to Subbiya I saw signs that this would be a mini adventure full of firsts.  The sky was blue, the impressive new roads were clear, and the scenery changed from the familiar flat land to small hills.

I was struck by two main features of this part of Kuwait.  The first is how the acres of land and water, with limited car and boat access, look completely untouched by man.  The area provides a significant this-is-how-I've-always-looked feel.  The second is how much it seems to change over a course of a day: It is a place of contrast.  More land is visible during low tide making the small creeks look like dwarfed canyons.  When the water changes shape with the wind, the light and colour of the whole environment shift into a different set of tones.  Add some intermittent cloud and you'll have an eternally changing work of art.

Speaking objectively, with a strange sense of surprise and pride, I have to say this area is breathtakingly beautiful.  It was indeed a trip of many firsts for me.  Yes I had seen sea birds in Kuwait before, and sometimes even a dolphin or two, but this time I was very close.  If we had to shoot some wildlife photos, this would be the perfect place to be left for a day (in a small hiding tent) and picked up in the evening.  There was one particular small island that I fell in love with.  The top layer was just shells - collected with the water currents over many many years.

I want to thank everyone who made this trip a reality.  It took a lot of planning, but more than that it took a lot of generousity of people who gave up chunks of their time and were very hospitable.  I had a great time and I can't wait to return.  My friend Ali Al Rashed, who was with me on this trip, also took some photos.  I'll let the images do the rest of the talking for me.
